Holiday Traditions With Bryan Baeumler

With the timely appearance of Old Man Winter, one thing remains certain: the holiday season is just around the corner! Whether you are heading to the Edmonton Renovation Show in 2018 for inspiration, DIY tricks or just to catch a glimpse of HGTV’s Bryan Baeumler, we sat down to find out more about the handyman and his favourite holiday memories.
When Bryan isn’t working within the Baeumler Brand, he is the father to four children and husband to design guru, Sarah Baeumler. With busy schedules and a packed agenda, Bryan makes sure there is always room to carry on holiday traditions from when he was a kid.
“We always used to honour the German tradition of opening one gift on Christmas Eve, while we set out the plate of cookies and milk for Santa,” says Bryan. “We put on some Christmas music, light the tree, and spread out the holiday a little instead of just tearing into the entire pile of gifts on Christmas morning!”
Constantly dishing out advice and offering his tips and expertise, we asked Bryan what the best holiday gift was that he had ever given to someone. “A few years ago while we were under construction, we got a karaoke machine for the kids. Shortly after Christmas there was a massive ice storm and we lost power for six days,” explains Bryan. “We had that thing plugged into the generator and sang songs around the wood stove in the candlelight. It was a pretty fun and musical Christmas!”
Have a handyman you need to shop for? Bryan shared his five best gift ideas for the renovator in your life.
1. The Stanley FatMax 16’ tape measure
“If you're laying out or framing houses, a 35’ or 25’ tape is a must, but most projects around the house can be handled with a smaller tape that fits easily in your hand or belt, has great standout, and is super tough!”
2. Carpenter’s pencils
“These thick, rectangular pencils are great for woodworking. Their shape keeps them from rolling away, and because they’re so popular, they’re always disappearing… which is why you need to buy a whole box to ‘share’ with your friends!”
3. DeWalt 20V impact driver
“With the addition of a multi-unit screwdriver, or any of the multi packs of drills or nut drivers, an impact driver is a great addition to the toolbox. From driving screws into subfloors, framing or duckboards, drilling holes or hanging pictures, it’s always handy to have an impact driver around.”
4. Cordless vacuum
“Small and easy to carry around, it’s a great idea to have one of these available for those small spills, dust, etc.”
5. Ratchet set with wrenches
“There’s lots of jobs around the house that require different sizes and shapes of drivers. Having all of the sockets, wrenches and bits in one spot is an easy way to keep everything organized and in one place so you know where they are when you need them. An adapter for the impact driver lets you use all of the sockets and attachments with a little more power and speed, too!”
Once the holidays are over and you have the newest tools begging to be put to use, be sure to drop by the Edmonton Renovation Show, January 28-30, 2018 at the Edmonton Expo Center to catch more tips, tricks and laughs from Bryan himself. We can't wait to see you there!
